I've just spent an incredible 14 days in India consulting on a project to protect farmers fields from an increasing incidence of raiding from an increasing population of elephants. This has come about by the protection allowed in the last 15 years to an indigenous population of elephants. Concern is growing among the farmers so a holistic solution was discussed and involves a multi-pronged solution. The migratory patterns of the elephants have been studied and this has been incorporated into the outline.  An electric fence is proposed along this route so allowing the migration but preventing access to the fields. It is also proposed that income derived from the elephants is channeled into the community in much the same manner as the Campfire process in Central Africa.
